If you need to buy a website but aren’t quite sure what SEO is, watch this 2 minute video to find out what it is and how it may affect your website and it’s performance in the long run. It might end up being a service that you decide to invest in to see an improvement in your rankings.
This is episode 9 of Jargon Busted, a series our COO Helen demystifies common website terms in just 2 minutes. Our company, Six Two, is a website development and website designer in Kent.
Hi, welcome to Jargon Busted. In the next two minutes I’ll be demystifying a piece of website jargon. In today’s episode I’ll be telling you about SEO.
SEO stands for search engine optimisation. From a business perspective, it refers to how high you rank in Google. Technically, it’s a series of activities that attempt to improve how high you rank on search engines for certain search terms.
Now, the holy grail is to be on page 1, position 1 when someone searches for a service or product you offer, as opposed to just you company’s name, but getting there can be a fierce game. Just because you have a website doesn’t automatically mean you’ll be on the first page.
It all depends on what your competition’s doing. If you’re going up against other competitor websites with the same search terms and they’ve been investing in their SEO for years, you’ve got a lot of catching up to do and ongoing, you’ll need to be doing more than them. Sometimes it’s not realistically feasible to compete, for example, massive sites like Trip Advisor and Airbnb are always going to be on page 1 for search terms like “holiday lets in Cornwall”, not an individual holiday let.
There’s a lot that can be done to create good SEO value. Some’s technical and happens in your website code but a lot comes down to your content: having the right amount of content with the right keywords in the right places. It’s also not a one-off thing, “I’ve done SEO, tick that box!” If you want to rise up the ranks, you either need to learn how to do it and invest your time or pay someone to do it for you.
