If you’re thinking of getting a new website, there’s lots of different types of website out there. Knowing which one is right for you can be a bit of a minefield. In this episode, we explain what website builders like Wix, SquareSpace and Shopify are. Learn the pros and cons of website builders and whether they’re the right route for your business at this stage.
This is episode 4 of Jargon Busted, a series where our COO Helen demystifies common website terms in just 2 minutes. Our company, Six Two, specialises in web design in Ashford Kent.
Welcome to Jargon Busted where, in two minutes, you’ll learn what a piece of website jargon really means. This week’s theme is website builders.
A website builder enables you to sign up online with a company such as Squarespace, Shopify, Wix and create your own website. You typically only pay a small monthly fee so it’s really affordable to get started.
Now, website builders are different to bespoke and template sites, which I cover in other episodes, where you pay upfront and own your website outright.
Website builders are more like a subscription or renting a house: you pay your rent but you don’t own the house, you just have the right to live there. This means that you don’t have as much control with website builders and if you want to do something that’s not included, you’ll either need to work around it or live without it.
Website builders enable you to customise your site with your logo, colours and pages so no two will look exactly the same although there will be similarities with other sites using the same builder.
Generally they’re fairly easy to use but it does take time to learn. Adverts claiming that you can create a website in an afternoon are in my opinion completely misleading unless you have experience designing websites. If you don’t, it takes time to learn, and it’s unlikely you’ll create a world-renowned design that generates sales beyond your wildest dreams, however if you’ve got a minimal budget and the time and inclination to do it yourself, a builder can be a great way to get started.
That’s it. I’m Helen from Six Two. Subscribe to the series to catch next week’s episode. Until then.
